‘Smoke Monk’ was a standout cut on the producer’s recent revered fabric 99 compilation, and is an example of the thoughtful yet danceable compositions he has been crafting over the last year or so, with his creativity heightened and informed by his ongoing live REFRACTED shows.
In the original, a deceptively jaunty beat is stealthily invaded by a mysterious, bubbling top line. Bongos, hi-hats and plucked strings reassert the rhythm's dominance before a soulful, plaintive melody drifts in, uniting the whole to evoke a yearning for something intangible. This ethereal track delivers more with each listen.
Polish born Berlin-based talent VONDA7 supplies the remix, having become a key voice on Sasha’s imprint through solo EPs and at the iconic label showcases worldwide. She creates a wholly different cut, with a stronger yet more stripped down beat, the ghostly harmonies now a muffled background rhythm as the bass is brought right to the fore with its own melodic but powerful insistent riff.
